What is HCV?
Hepatitis C virus is a single-stranded, positive-stranded (55–65 nm) RNA virus that belongs to the family Flaviviridae viruses. The hepatitis C virus causes hepatitis C and certain cancers, such as liver cancer (Hepatocellular carcinoma – HCC) and human lymphoma. Hepatitis C virus has 6 genotypes, each of which responds to treatment differently. Genotype 1 is more common than genotypes 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6; It is estimated that it accounts for 70% to 80% of chronic hepatitis C cases in the United States.
Why test for HCV?
Acute hepatitis C becomes chronic in about 75% of patients. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 2.4 million people in the United States are chronically infected with hepatitis C. Worldwidely it is estimated that 71 million people have chronic hepatitis C. Chronic hepatitis C progresses to cirrhosis in 20 to 30% of patients; Cirrhosis usually appears decades later. Hepatocellular carcinoma can result from HCV-induced cirrhosis but is rare in chronically infected patients without cirrhosis.
Common HCV tests
There are many different types of hepatitis C tests available, and each test has its own use and purpose, including tests such as:
Classification test for HCV:
- HCVAg: the most common type of test used to determine the presence of the virus in the blood.
- HCV RNA: in-depth test for people who have been detected positive with HCV to help quantify viral load in the blood.
- HCV Genotype: helps determine the genotype of the virus and provides appropriate treatment.
Solutions ABT provides
To be able to determine the actual amount of virus in the patient’s body to help doctors assess the stage of hepatitis C virus infection and provide appropriate treatment solutions, ABT has built and developed a test kit using Real-time RT PCR One-step method to measure viral load in 1 reaction without a separate reverse transcription step.
TopSENSI® HCV One-step RT-qPCR KIT is developed as a kit that includes all components such as master mix, internal control, positive control, and negative control, which makes it convenient for customers to use. Here are a few key specifications of the kit:
+ Detection: FAM channel for HCV detection, HEX channel: internal control
+ Sensitivity: 250 IU/ml
+ Linear range: 10⁹ – 2.5×10 copies/mL
+ Fluorescence: TaqMan probe
+ Specificity: The kit only detects HCV
+ Storage: 12 months, temperature -20℃
In addition, ABT also provides a solution for HCV typing by using a combination of the following 2 real-time kits. The TopSENSI® HCV qPCR KIT two-step real-time PCR kit is used to detect the presence and quantification of viral load in the blood. The TopSENSI® HCV Genotype qPCR KIT will help identify individual HCV strains so that doctors can have a basis for drug treatment. Information about the HCV TopSENSI® HCV Genotype qPCR KIT:
+ Detect:
- FAM channel for HCV genotype 1
- HEX channel for HCV genotype 6
- Texas Red channel for HCV genotype 2
- Cy5 channel for HCV genotype 3
+ Sensitivity: 250 IU/ml
+ Fluorescence: TaqMan probe
+ Specificity: The kit only detects HCV
+ Storage: 12 months, temperature -20℃
